Distance Learning Update

Dear Families,

In the days since our school closed its campus due to the COVID-19 outbreak, our staff has done amazing things to keep students connected while they transition to Distance Learning. From e-learning innovations to keeping students’ spirits high with video clips and photo challenges, teachers, staff and students have shown extraordinary resilience during this difficult time.

Clearly, the rise of the COVID-19 emergency is unprecedented in recent times. It is a threat, and any threat of this nature and magnitude will naturally cause us to respond with varying degrees of concern. The most important thing right now is you and your family’s health and emotional well being.

I know how hard layering Distance Learning into this situation is. It can feel overwhelming. Some families were very ready for virtual school to start up and some were scared. However strange or difficult the experience may be, we need to partner and to try to make this work. That requires flexibility and lots and LOTS of grace.

The activities teachers are sharing with you are meant to help you navigate this incredibly stressful time, and give you something directed to do with your child if you are looking for help with that. They are not meant to be stressful, or make you feel as though you’re not doing enough. If these activities are helpful for you, that’s great. If they do not work right now with your family’s schedule and whatever is happening at home, that is perfectly fine. If you would like to circle back to them later, great! And if you want to access the links to additional resources in search of more, that’s great too.

While the shelter-in-place ordinance is in effect, formal conferences are postponed. Teachers will send digital PDF report cards out on April 2nd and 3rd. You may of course talk with your teacher at any of the many check-ins about progress, goals, and grades.

In closing, I wish you and your family the very best. Please follow safety guidelines using social distancing and hygiene protocols. Remember, life will get back to normal eventually, but hopefully, after this experience is over, our lives will include more appreciation of our blessings and our freedoms.

Best Regards, Annaben Kazemi, Principal

Queridas familias,

Best Regards,

Distance Learning Update

Dear George Hall Families,

Thank you for your patience while we work through all of the logistics of moving to Distance Learning. Tuesday’s Distribution Day was extremely successful. Thank you to everyone who followed the pick-up schedule to avoid crowds and remain safe. As of this writing, ALL students have been delivered a Distance Learning Plan. These are unprecedented times and things seem to be changing daily. Your flexibility and support in helping your child navigate through all of this is appreciated.  Here are a few updates:

Students have now received information about how to proceed with lessons and instruction for Distance Learning through Spring Break.  While we are not sure when school will reopen, we have currently planned to provide instruction beginning Friday, March 20 through Friday, April 3.  Please check in with your child’s teacher for lesson assignments and updates daily.

During Distance Learning, teachers are working from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm and then again from 1:00 pm - 3:15 pm, Monday through Friday.  Please feel free to email teachers through their District email accounts. All teacher emails can be found by using the first initial of their first name followed by their last name @smfcsd.net (ex: John Smith - jsmith@smfcsd.net) Teachers will do their best to return emails within a 24 hour period, Monday -Friday. (Staff Directory)

Staff will be contacting students through various platforms including email, phone calls or via Google Hangouts/ zoom video chats. These individual conversations (student/teacher) are designed as check-ins for students and will help them remain connected to the George Hall staff and community.  Conversations will likely be about 5-10 minutes and students can communicate how they are doing and ask any questions they have about the assignments or other issues. The classroom teacher will act as the liaison between the student and all of their other teachers so they will then share concerns from the student to other staff members as needed.

Since we are currently under a Shelter-in-Place order through the county, there is not a designated time to return completed classwork to school until after Spring Break.  If students complete assignments online, they can virtually turn things in to their teachers via email, but any hard copies of assignments will need to wait.

We also understand that having children at home may create additional stress on our families, putting them out of work to care for their children.  Also, several of our community members have had their work compromised due to the current Shelter-in-Place order, so we wanted to share some resources for families in need.

Again, your support and flexibility during these difficult times is very much appreciated.

Be well,

Facility Needs Feedback

Dear Staff and School Community,

We had a good kick-off recently to getting input about the facilities' needs at our school.

The District and I want to make sure that every staff member and parent (and students if they're interested) who wants to provide input on facilities' needs have the opportunity to do so whether or not they could attend the School Community Meeting. If you'd like to provide your suggestions about facility needs at our school--repair, replacement, new or additional--please use one of the links below.

For the English Survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/smfcsdfacilityneeds

For the Survey in Spanish https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/enespanol

Our School Facilities Master Plan Team will be considering all input over the next couple of months including the needs identified by the District for the school, the input provided at the recent School Community Meeting about the development of the SMFCSD Facilities Master Plan for the New Decade, and input from the Survey. Please provide your input as soon as possible--the Survey will be available through the end of February.

Fence Update & Facilities Master Plan Meeting

Dear George Hall Families,

One of the hallmarks of the George Hall community is the value we all place on having an inclusive environment that supports all our students. Along with that value, student safety is paramount.

On Monday, I shared that George Hall was planning to install a fence over Winter Break to provide better security for students. The fencing project has been delayed while the School District awaits approval from the Division of the State Architect (DSA). This delay provides an opportunity for our community to look at the design in relation to the entire yard and determine what will be best for all students. We want to ensure that this security fencing does not create a barrier between students and does not compromise our collaborative and inclusive programs.

Our school is in the Phase II of the Measure X projects and will also be adding a Multi Purpose Room in the near future. Community discussion on this project will begin in January. We will convene to gain input on the new facility, as well as the design of our yard in relation to this proposed project.

On Wednesday, January 29th at 6:00 pm in the George Hall School LGI you are invited to a school community meeting for parents and staff to learn about what Facilities Master Plans are and the process for developing a new one for the District.  See what's been accomplished at our school site since the 2013 Facilities Master Plan, and have an opportunity to provide input on school facility needs for the new Facilities Master Plan.

Best Regards,

Annaben Kazemi

August 2019

Welcome

Dear George Hall Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I hope you enjoyed a summer vacation filled with fun and exciting memories with your loved ones. We are thrilled to welcome all of you back to a new school year of learning and growing.

Personally, I am grateful and elated to continue this journey with you as your Principal. Over the past year, I have had a chance to meet your children as well as many of you, and I look forward to continuing to foster relationships with all of you in the upcoming year. As we enter this new school year, I want to let you know that our staff will be engaging in conversations around math and language arts that focus on inclusion and differentiation.  We believe in making George Hall a warm, joyful place for all children to learn and grow.

I want to personally invite you to attend our Back-to-School Night on Tuesday August 20th  from 5:30-7 PM. This will be a time to strengthen our George Hall community, meet teachers and other families, and learn about the upcoming school year. We will begin the evening with a short school-wide meeting with PTA in the LGI, and from there you will have the opportunity to visit with teachers at each grade-level. I hope to see each of you at this important event.

Please stop by and say hello. I welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to our school, and I look forward to working with you and your children. Thank you to all who are helping prepare for the new school year. Your commitment to insuring that George Hall remains a celebrated and successful school is inspiring. Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth and achievement for all children.

Warm Regards,

Annaben Kazemi
