The Green Team is an initiative to responsibly sort waste at George Hall. Our school has a long history of classroom recycling of paper and involving students to take turns bringing their recycling to our custodian on a daily basis. During the 2018-2019 school year, parents wanted to deepen this commitment and began piloting a lunch time waste-sorting program where students sort their lunch scraps into liquids, compost, landfill, and recycling. In fall 2019, we designed and built our sorting stations to help with this effort. As of 2020, we now sort our waste during snack and lunch on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Students are allowed to sign-up to help with the effort. We hope to establish a robust food share program soon. We are able to divert about a third to half of our waste from the landfill and towards liquid separation, compost, and recycling. We welcome parent volunteers who would like to help students sort their waste and make a significant difference towards a cleaner planet Earth. More information can be found at the PTA website. Our Green Team is thankful to the San Mateo County Office of Sustainability who helped fund our waste sorting stations and educated our PTA volunteers, staff, and students.
